Tintin DVD scores high on the sales charts

”Tintin” is out on DVD! Well, in the USA at least. As far as I know it’s not out in my country yet, and I’ve already pre-ordered the mega-combo of 3D-Blu-ray/Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy from Amazon. It’ll be shipped to me sometime at the end of the month, so unfortunately there won’t be a detailed review from the site on the DVD until then( at least…). But as soon as I get it I’ll have hours of fun with it and post up a full review. If anybody is interested, the ”deal” I thought I was getting (pay 30 dollars before it comes out instead of the ”full price” of 50 dollars it would have supposedly cost in stores) is still pretty much in effect. The set still costs 30 dollars, only now it’s ”on sale” for that price instead of it’s ”old” price of 50 dollars. I don’t know how much it costs to buy the same thing in a real store, but I still felt 30 dollars was reasonable for what it was, especially to a collector like me.  There are sets out there with the Weta figurines too, but I didn’t want to pay quite that much…If you’re interested in what I got, here’s the link:

Anyway, back to the news. Tintin´s DVD release is doing well in the US! It  was the second best-selling DVD in the US last week, behind Happy Feet 2. From The Hollywood Reporter:

On the overall sales chart for the week ending March 18, Warner Home Video’s Happy Feet Two, which earned $64 million in U.S. theaters, debuted at No. 1. Paramount’s The Adventures of Tintin($77.6 million) bowed at No. 2, and 20th Century Fox’s The Descendants ($82 million) arrived at No. 3.

It’s interesting that the order in which these 3 movies appear on the charts (so far) is from the least grossing movie to greatest. Not so with the Blu-ray DVDs:

On the Blu-ray Disc sales chart, all three films also captured the top three spots, albeit in a different order. The top-selling Blu-ray Disc was Tintin, with Descendants at No. 2 and Happy Feet Two trailing at No. 3.

As a matter of fact, ”Tintin” did much better on Blu-ray than the other two films:

Nielsen research shows Tintin generated 50 percent of its sales from the Blu-ray Disc format, compared with 32 percent for Descendents and just 23 percent for Happy Feet Two.

That doesn’t surprise me one bit. Out of the three, Tintin is, in my opinion, the one I would most enjoy seeing in a high definition because it’s so visually stunning. I also bet the enormous amount of special features only available on the Blu-ray copy (to the despair of non-blu-ray owners) could only help increase the sales.

I’ll keep looking to see how the DVD does in the future. I sincerely hope that, regardless of bad timing and a lack of families going to see the film, many people will buy this movie so that the whole family, and especially the kids, can watch it over and over again.

It’s not TOO suprising. Happy Feet Two still had some greater initial name recognition. What will happen, however, is that Tintin will show greater staying power and should outsell his competitors.

It is a movie for the ages.
