Spielberg reports he would like to direct ”Tintin 3”
A few months ago blogs were resuscitating the old, old news that Spielberg and Jackson were planning on making a Tintin 2 and 3, but it’s been ages since Spielberg told us he was directing the first, and if the film did well (which it did) Peter would direct the second and Peter and Spielberg would probably co-direct the third one. However, in a recent interview Spielberg has said that he had so much fun directing Tintin, he’d love to do it again for Tintin 3. He’s also given us a little bit of a heads up as to how the stories will be combined in the next one, and while he won’t say what stories have been picked, they have apparently been picked. From Collider:
“I’m not going to say which stories have been chosen for Peter Jackson’s sequel because Peter and I agreed that we weren’t going to let that information out yet,” says Spielberg. “The script is now being written. It’s more than one book, but it’s not three books, so that means it’s two books. It’s two and a half books that we’re combining with The Secret of the Unicorn.”
“Peter will start working on the film this year,” continues the director. “When he’s done shooting The Hobbit, he’ll begin his performance capture work with the actors later in 2012, which I’m very excited about. And of course, I’m hoping I’ll be able to direct the third one. I’d love to do the third one because I had so much fun on the first one.”
Because of the way the last movie was left ”open”, I’m guess that half of a book he mentioned will be a part of Red Rackham’s Treasure. But unlike other websites out there I don’t believe that will be the name of the movie or the primary focus of the story line. Outside of ”Red Rackham’s treasure” there are two more books, and Horowitz and Kathleen Kennedy have both confirmed it’s not ”7 Crystal balls” or ”Prisoners of the Sun”. I think it’s very unlikely they’ve chosen the two moon stories (we haven’t even met Calculus yet), and that’s the end of Hergé’s two part albums. So, love it or loathe it, that means we’re going to see some more stand alone albums mixed into one movie. The only alternative would be to create about an hour’s worth of entirely new material. I liked how the stories were combined in the last movie, and I’m confident it can be done again. Unfortunately, Horowitz is faced with the venerable task of pleasing fans while pulling Tintin’s stories out of chronological order.
Hopefully it won’t be too long before they reveal the next albums to be adapted. We’ve been told the Thompson’s will have a bigger role in the next story (could that imply Land of Black Gold?). I’d love to see the Calculus Affair, or maybe something with Rastopopoulous. And I’d love to see the fat lady in the phone booth scene show up. somewhere, somehow.
One last thought:If Spielberg does direct the third movie, Peter will be left with one less movie than Steven. I’m not sure how the financial side of that might work out, but the ideal solution would be to make 4 movies instead of three. I think ”Destination Moon” would make an excellent Tintin 4.

They could use the storyline of “The Shooting Star” and combined it with “Red Rackham”, Both stories are similar: a ship journey to find an island. The “End of the world” sequence could be spectacular with this new technology.
Also they could use Calculus instead Professor Calys, in fact Calys was an early version of Calculus and both of them are astronomy experts. The discovery of the calystene could open the door for the moon adventure in Tintin 4.
The bad guy could be Rastapopoulus instead of the too jewish Bohwinkel.
January 15th, 2012 at 6:20 pmI still think it would be a wasted opportunity if Tintin In Tibet is not one of the films. It’s such a great piece, that I think it deserves to have a movie.
January 15th, 2012 at 7:31 pmTintin just won the Golden Globe for Best Animated Film ! Hurrayyyyy !!!
January 16th, 2012 at 2:16 amI agree, one of them really should be TIntin in Tibet. I read somewhere, probably a rumor, that they weren’t going to do the moon books till the third movie.
January 16th, 2012 at 2:21 amKathleen Kennedy has pretty much announced that The Calculus Affair is to be the second movie. Personally, I believe Red Rackham’s Treasure will take up the first third of the movie. There’s no news about the third movie but I think it would be fantastic to do The Blue Lotus (with a less racist portrayal of the Japanese) combined with Tintin in Tibet.
January 16th, 2012 at 7:36 amTintin in Tibet would make a good movie. But it will definitely be Tintin 3 or 4, as they are trying to introduce Calculus for Tintin 2 and he is hardly in it.
January 16th, 2012 at 8:09 amI’m highly doubtful that they are going to put Rastapopoulos into any of the movies. Sakharine is ten times better than Rastapopoulos, and if Allan already works for Sakharine, than how can he work for Rastapopoulos? (that name is becoming really irritating to type). Unless, the 2 villains team up…….that could be interesting, and maybe they would have the fight that Rastapopoulos had with Carriedas in Flight 714. I just love that argument!
I enjoyed the movie and Sakharine was a lot of fun but I think Rastapopoulos is the better villain. Dr Muller and Jorgen are probably the most intense Tintin villains though.
January 16th, 2012 at 11:06 amDo you think they’d really go from the intense action sequences of Tintin 1 and 2 to Tintin to Tibet, where we get no Calculus, Thompsons or main villain, to save the Tchang character that we would have to either introduce in Tintin 2 and save in tintin 3, or introduce and save in Tintin 3. It’s a great story and I think the most touching story of all the albums, but I’m not sure if it would feel very consistent with Spielberg’s and Jackson’s Tintin. But it would be a beautiful movie to see if it was chosen, and I love how much it shows of Haddock’s and tintin’s friendship.
January 16th, 2012 at 5:23 pmI think we’ll see Tintin in Tibet. It’s one of Peter Jackson’s favourites.
January 17th, 2012 at 1:54 amTintin in Tibet definitely should be made into a movie, I have always liked it!
January 17th, 2012 at 2:58 am@Stephen
I never said it should be the next movie, just one of them.
January 17th, 2012 at 11:18 amAren’t “The Cigars of the Pharaoh” and “The Blue Lotus” also one story in two books…?
Perhaps they could also mix “King Ottokar’s Sceptre” with “The Calculus Affair”…
