Better image from Cannes
The image from my last post has been slightly improved. Thank you SO much, Mike Dutton! I have cropped the image to focus on the most relative part of the new image.

My thoughts are essentially the same as they were when I commented on the image in my original post. I love the dramatic lighting in the image. But despite how awesome it looks, it seems that even in their early advertising campaign they are determined to hide Tintin’s face from us. It’s almost like they’ve forgotten the fact that they already revealed it on the cover of Empire, which makes me wonder if there’s something we don’t know yet. Will there be a difference between the final Tintin and the Tintin on Empire’s cover? Tintin’s face has never actually been revealed from any still from the film. I would assume that it will still be pretty close to the boyish Tintin that we’ve seen. This face goes great with the Tintin we see in ”The Secret of The Unicorn”, a relatively ”early” Tintin.
I don’t know how I missed this before, but another obvious difference in the image is that Tintin is wearing his trademark coat, which looks great flying behind him. The addition of the coat once again makes Tintin look more dynamic, as does the completely new running Snowy. I can tell already that, even though there may not be a main female character in the story, cute little Snowy will help bring in the female audience. I actually know a few girls who only read the books because of Snowy.
After a further look at the right side of the image (that I cropped above) I came across an interesting detail. In a recent interview with Steven Moffat, the writer who started the script for the Tintin movie but had to leave after he was offered the job of writing the new Doctor Who series, the writer was asked how much of his work he thought was still in the movie. He answered:
I’m sure hardly any. I haven’t kept track. I now don’t know which bits are secret and what aren’t. So, I’m very circumspect. I mean, I was the one that left. I was the baddie there. They didn’t sack me, or anything. I left to do Doctor Who and they were incredibly kind and decent about that. They could have kicked up more of a legal fuss about it, frankly. But they were really gentlemanly about it and they were lovely people to work with.
So how much of his work was left in the film? Maybe more than he thought. Whatever may be the case, his name is still proudly written in the credits below the title, next to Joe Cornish’s (behind the sign) and right above Steven Spielberg’s:

I think it’s nice of them to mention his name and to mention it first. Of course it would have been unfair to give him no credit, but the film is still recognized as being written by Steven Moffat. I can’t wait to see how the movie comes along. Forget teaser trailers! Skip right to a full length trailer! We have been teased long enough.
UPDATE: here’s another angle. Great job Britto for finding it. Not as great a view of Tintin but very clear titles and credits:

Just for humour, regarding the sequel.
Without a doubt, it’ll be Prisoner of the Sun, especially how Anthony Horowitz has claimed that… But when considering the casting, we have yet to know who is playing Calculus, but how bad a casting choice would it be to have Professor Tarragon be played by anyone other than Brian Blessed? Just one look at either of them will give you your answer.
May 9th, 2011 at 9:33 pmI still think there will be some modification in the face of Tintin. And for me it would be nice if they put some facial details of Jamie Bell. He looks like Tintin, I don’t see problem…
May 10th, 2011 at 1:43 amAnd I also think that Tintin is not a problem having a face more child. Remember Harry Potter, which was growing with each film…
What amazed me is that it’s in English, in Cannes (France). I’m French so obviously I’m biased but a movie adaptation of Tintin in a French city, I will think the title will be in French.
Oh well as long as it’s great, I do not mind.

A new actress for Castafiore? I hop not, but: http://www.tintimportintim.com/2011/05/outra-castafiore-renee-fleming-grava.html
May 10th, 2011 at 4:04 amActually Thierry, I agree with you. At the very least I believe the title should have been translated. But in the end the advertisement really seems to be for the film festival and not all of France in general. I would expect french advertisments to come later.
May 10th, 2011 at 7:06 am@Britto: if they totally recast Castafiore, it would be oh so easy to not have to change her physical appearance at all with the technology. But I wonder if it’s possible that one actress is acting and the other singing. Both sing opera though, so they’d have to have a good reason why not to use Kim Stengel. Anyway, she barely has a part in the second story and we’re not yet sure as to how she shows up in the first film. Anyway, they had to get some female character in there, didn’t they?
Interesting comments on the gun -

May 10th, 2011 at 10:06 am“I can tell already that, even though there may not be a main female character in the story, cute little Snowy will help bring in the female audience.”
This is amusing to me. Out of the majority of female Tintin fans I have met online and in real life, most of them are in the fandom because of Tintin himself, not Snowy. But I guess ever fandom has its fans as well as its fangirls.
Also, the person who wrote that article in Chris Tregenza’s comment mentioned Snowy looking fattish. I’m sort of inclined to think that if they’re obscuring Snowy’s face on other merchandising and then revealing it on something like this, that this here image of Snowy isn’t the final one. It just seems odd that they’d go to the effort to blur his face somewhere and not elsewhere.

May 10th, 2011 at 2:56 pmTintin needs his trench coat altered. His sleeves are too short for him. XD
May 10th, 2011 at 3:31 pm@ Emily
Notice that Tintin is running? When people run, their coat sleeves are often pulled back a little, depending on how fast they’re running.

That’s it. I think we have officially reached the point where we are overanalyzing (dare I say it, with no intended offence to anyone, overchiwing) every morsel information we get to the point of utter ridiculoslness.
I admit it, that misguided BleedingLame article tried my patience, with its utter lackof understanding of Tintin, Spielberg’s process, or the Tintin movie and the put-on suprise (sure, let’s pretend that we never saw the shot of Tintin holding a gun in the first batch of pictures) but then I took to the comments (on that site, not here) and ~shrugs~.
Here’s an idea – how about, instead of fearing that one of the actors got replaced along with any other millions of logistics related things we were never privy too – the true news item becomes that they are filming a huge motion capture sequence with a massive live orchestra in a prominent recording ballroom with John Williams for this movie? How come no one comments on THAT? Just picture it. I mean how epic will this look when it’s shown in 3D? Or the fact that this Renee Fleming lady is a real pro and sounds pretty amazing too?
I am going to go out on a limb and assume that this sequence is not a reshoot at all (we would have heard something about it earlier) and was always going to be filmed at a latter date – makes sense, too, considering the other portions of the score are being recorded right about now. There is a reason why the movie is set for late, 2011.
One more thing, maybe it’s just me but I really don’t think anyone’s hiding TIntin’s face on that Cannes poster. I think its being obscured by shadows purely for dramatic effect.
In any case, I know the tension is running pretty high among fans (and passers by) at the moment but I think that we are about to enter the period of high coverage for this film so I would just encourage everyone to hold on and ignore trivial things and concentrate on the final product that, by all indications, is still a work in progress. Most importantly, take everything that originates from advertisers, and, especially, 3rd party sources but doesn’t come straight from the film with a grain of salt.
May 10th, 2011 at 5:40 pmI edited the last picture: http://i21.servimg.com/u/f21/15/71/57/73/tintin17.jpg
About the possible replacement of the actress who plays Bianca Castafiore, I think it’s possible. I talked with Kim Stengel (announced to play Castafiore) and she knows nothing about. In my opinion, may be just an additional scene of the first movie, or perhaps the first recording of the sequence. Just remember that one of the opening scenes of “The 7 Crystal Balls” is happening in the theater, where Castafiore sings, and as the second movie is based on “Prisoners of the Sun”… I think that’s a real possibility.
May 10th, 2011 at 6:44 pmCould also be a different character altogether (it takes places in the opera so it’s in the realm of possibility). I highly doubt it been done for the second movie though – the timing is all wrong.
May 10th, 2011 at 7:04 pmThe edited version shows that Tintin’s face is more or less the same as what we’ve seen on the Empire magazine cover. They only added a gun and his trench coat and changed Snowy’s position. When looking between the Empire cover and this advertisment, I actually don’t see much of a difference between Snowy’s face either. Just that we’re seeing it from a different angle.
However, I do agree with Proman. Everything’s being analysed too much. But it’s so hard not to when we’ve got nothing else to see until the trailer.
P.S. @ Mike Dutton.
I realise that. The smilie at the end of my post was meant to imply that I was joking. I understand the movement of clothing; I was a visual art student for some years. Sorry for the confusion.
