Tintin In Total Film
Total Film’s web site has a feature entitled The Adventures Of Tintin: Everything We Know. It is a recap of how Spielberg acquired the rights, the problems of financing, the cast and working with Peter Jackson.
There is no new information but there is some confusing / wrong information.
On the script Total Film says “The first draft was knocked up by Coupling writer Stephen Moffat, only for him to turn his back on the project”. This is not entirely true – The script was complete but Moffat was prevented from working on the script for the second film because of the writers strike in America. By the time that finished, he had been offered a chance to fulfill a life long ambition to write for Dr Who.
See Moffat Walked Away From Tintin and Moffat Denies Quitting Tintin for our original coverage. Note also how Total Film report that Moffat walked away from $2 million yet the original newspaper reports it was £500,000. A great example of the guesswork and the constant inflation inherent in the game of chinese whispers that is reporting on Hollywood.
Total Film go on to give credit to Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish for the bulk of the script writing duties where as the original press release gives them equal credit and the info at the time suggested this was just minor changes to Moffat’s script. However Total Film go on to say:
“….have condensed events from three of Hergé’s stories (The Crab with the Golden Claws, The Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham’s Treasure) in order to introduce the major characters ….”
This is (probably) wrong.
Comments from Spielberg have previously put the first film as covering The Crab and events up to the end of Unicorn. Also Professor Calculus has never appeared on any cast list and Red Rackham’s Treasure would be unthinkable without Calculus and the shark submergible.

Really appreciate your calling all the BS in the Total’s article. Respect. I have been in this game long enough to know that most of the time online “journos” post something, they don’t really care for accuracy or completeness (as much as they care about egotism and sensationalism). And the information they post, it’s almost always entirely secondhand. Thanks for at the very least pointing out that they stuff they “KNOW” could be gathered with more accuracy elsewhere (like here).
July 21st, 2010 at 3:05 amHi,
I’ve read on the IMDb forums that on the new issue of Empire magazine there is a new interview with Spielberg about Tintin, where he discusses characters and some scenes. Apparently it’s only on the printed edition, so if anyone could scan it that would be great :)
I love this site, by the way!
July 28th, 2010 at 4:54 pmHi,
Someone on the IMDB boards claims that the august issue of Empire Australia has an article called “The Future of Cinema”, where Spielberg gives informations on his Tintin movie ; apparently, he talks about scenes of the film, character design and the way he shot the movie.
The thing is, there’s no way to find this article online, or even find a proof of its existence.
Just thought I should share it with you anyway. Maybe it’ll pop up online soon.
July 28th, 2010 at 9:44 pmThanks for the info – I’ll keep an eye out for it.
July 29th, 2010 at 9:28 amNot the most exctiting piece of news ever but:
http://www.musicrooms.net/showbiz/11082-Daniel-Craig-Wore-Lycra-Meet-Eastwood.html
Daniel Craig was mortified to discover he would be meeting Clint Eastwood while wearing a skin-tight motion-capture suit.
The lycra body stockings are used in movies which include a lot of computer-generated imagery (CGI). They are covered in motion sensors, so actor’s movements can be monitored when the imagery is added in after shooting.
Daniel had to wear one for The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, which is directed by Steven Spielberg and due out next year, and Steven has revealed he was not happy about it.
“When we were shooting Tintin, Daniel Craig was on set in his performance capture outfit and I invited Clint Eastwood to come by to see what we were doing because he had never seen the digital world of performance capture technology,” he recalled to Empire magazine.
“Daniel came over to me and said, ‘There’s a rumour going around that you invited Clint Eastwood to come and see the set?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ Daniel said, ‘I’m not gonna meet him looking like this. I’ve wanted to meet that man all my life and you’ve invited him and I’m looking like this?!’”
Steven told the anecdote in a joint interview with James Cameron, who used the technology for his movie Avatar. He was quizzed on whether he had ever been tempted to put on the suit, as Peter Jackson did when he was shooting King Kong.
“Maybe if I have six weeks to work out. That suit is unforgiving. Your love handles hang out. Your gut hangs out,” he laughed.
July 31st, 2010 at 3:42 amHi,
Here’s a link where you can download that Empire article : http://www.mediafire.com/?68bo0hlh6cqdbdo
Nothing spectacular on the Tintin movie though. The one thing that I thought was cool was Steven Spielberg talking about a scene from The Crab with the Golden Claws that made it into the movie.
August 4th, 2010 at 9:14 pmThanks for the link, Archibald. There may not be a ton of Tintin info (maybe it’s for the best – I want some art rather than spoilers)but the interview irself is spectacular!
