Williams Finishes Tintin Score

In the first bit of Tintin Movie news in ages, legendary composer John Williams has finished his work on the score for Tintin.

This titbit of information appears near the end of this article: Endlessly devoted to his music

At home in Los Angeles, he takes a one-hour break from writing each day at dusk, he says, to walk at a golf course near his house. After his walk he returns to the piano, working until he has finished the day’s writing task: two or so minutes of music. Williams has just completed a chamber music piece for the La Jolla Music Society’s SummerFest in California and the score for “The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn,’’ a Steven Spielberg movie due out next year.

It may be short of news but mentioning John Williams gives me an excuse to feature this video.

    Yeah! Go John Williams!

Good to see you’re not dead :-) It’s been lonely without Tintin news…

Sorry about the lack of activity.

A combination of demands on my time relating to health & wealth has made it difficult. Plus Moulinsart’s aggressive stance on copyright etc has made me very wary about writing on certain topics.

There also hasn’t been a great deal of actual Tintin Movie news.

However, the Twitter account is still active with links to various bits of Tintin news. Twitter is a quick and easy way to pass on information so this is where most of my Tintin activity is at the moment. Have a look at the Twitter side-bar to your left. When I have time, I’ll set-up something better, such as a weekly post of all the links I’ve posted over the last week but at the moment, time is very tight.

    Thanks for the on-going support.

    Chris

Yeah,it’s great to see SOMETHING. Outside of finished pictures open for the public,I can’t think of better Tintin movie news! No matter how the movie comes out I would watch it for the sole purpose of the soundtrack! :-)
Speaking of Moulinsart and it’s copyright and such,is Steven Spielberg allowed to make as much merchandise of of this as he would any other movie? I mean, will Tintin suddenly have it’s own line of action figures, mugs, McDonald’s or Burger king happy meal toys, T-shirts and all of that like when, say, Indiana Jones and the kingdom of the crystal skull came out,etc Will Moulinsart actually let them go from a world with very little Tintin merchandise available outside of outrageous prices (as opposed to all other comics I know of with all their adds and stuff that make it on bags and the like ALL the time) to a world where Tintin will be available all over the place for relatively low prices,or at least normal ones? I am really hoping so :-) We know there will be a videogame…
The way I see it I win either way, because if the movie is great all the fans will celebrate and enjoy it and in the near impossible case the movie flops, all that great Tintin stuff just might actually go on sale…(wow,I never thought I would see those words together in the same sentence…)

  4. Chris Tregenza Says:

Yes, there will be a lot of licensed merchandise released with the film. They started offering the license about a year ago, before they started shooting.

This will leave two types of merchandise: Original Tintin and Movie Tintin.

How different they will be is going to depend on the look of the movie. If the film replicates the comics, then it will be hard to tell them apart. But if the film has its own distinctive style (most likely) then the two types of merchandise will noticeably different.

There was some speculation in the recent FT article on Moulinsart about the Nick Rodwell’s approach to merchandise and how that will fit with the movie merchandise.

I just read the article. The worst thing that could happen to Tintin is for Spielberg to acquire the rights to make up his own story. But for crying out loud,he’s got 23 stories to choose from! He has everything from Egyptian tombs (indy 1), lost elephants in the india (indy 2), Petra (indy 3) and even aliens taking away the main antagonist after fights in the jungle! (…wow…indy 4). It doesn’t surprise me this was compared to Tintin…I may have to read that article Spielberg read…
Anyway I hope he doesn’t do that. Anymore than I wouldn’t want a new book to come out. To some degree Tintin could be kidnapped like the article said. But in my opinion he couldn’t be in better hands. With a good storyline, good actors and good directors, the only problem I could see would be if somebody gets greedy over money and throws all this off.
But I’m all for Tintin for kids! And a new marketing strategy. Although collecting Tintin stuff is great and it will lose some of the fun when it is just as easy to find as the latest Cartoon network show toys, I will still enjoy seeing my favorite cartoon character in more places than just expensive hobby shops…I hope to collect the entire Happy Meal line of toys. Kids need a better character to imitate than Zack and Cody and stuff to read that beats the extremely little out there for them. If I were their age today I wouldn’t care for books much either! Hopefully Tintin may spark their interest. I honestly doubt it,but maybe. I hope (though I also doubt) that Moulinsart will drop some at least of it’s prices too. They are SO high…I’ve been to the Tintin shop and I loved it,but I didn’t leave with much to show for it. A drop in prices may be what they need…it’s definitely what the new fans who have never heard of Tintin will want.
I can’t wait. Keep us posted! I love this blog. Keep an eye open for new news.

Stephen, no the worst thing that could have happened if Tintin went to a less respectful and, let’s face it, capable director than Spielberg.

It was clear from the begining that Steven was going to be respectful to the source (that’s how he got the blessing from Herge in the first place) and the fact that he took the time to make the film is very encouraging. It will likely not be a word for word remake of the comics, but then it really shouldn’t be, not from ANY director or screenwriters. What we should expect is a faithful adaptation.

But that’s just me ranting. The comments above concerning toys and merchandising are widely off the mark. Spielberg is not a producer on Indiana Jones movies and very little, if any, involvement in merchandising. That’s all Lucas and Lucas Film. Also, historically, Steven isn’t known for huge McDonalds tie ins for his films.

Still, I’m sure that Universal & Sony, and perphaps even Spielberg himself, probably see potential in popularizing the character through toys so I wouldn’t
be suprised if they worked out a deal in advance. Whatever that would be, would be officially endorsed by Moulinsart.

  7. Stephen Says:

I trust Spielberg. Really I can’t think of anybody who could do this better. I can’t wait to see my favorite cartoon character brought to the big screen. As far as what really happens,it will be interesting to see. I can wait.

This has nothing to do with the post but I thought i would ask here. Does anybody know anything about this rumor that says part of ”The Shooting star ” will be in the tintin movie? According to Wikipedia it will, but a citation is needed. The page linked to the game you just posted mentions it too but i’m guessing they heard it from Wikipedia. Is this confirmed?
It wouldn’t surprise me at all if they made it a race to Red Rackham’s treasure instead of just a voyage to it like in the book. In that sense I see where The Shooting star would fit in…

  9. Chris Tregenza Says:

I saw that and I assumed it was just rubbish. I’ve seen no mention that anything from the Shooting Star will be included in the first picture.

As yet there is no indication that the second film will even be Red Rackham’s. Jackson is said to be considering several other books.

What I don’t understand is how the music can be recorded, edited and mixed months before release and still not leaked. In this time and age… I mean, the whole world (ok, at least a small part of it) is waiting anxiously to hear the latest greatest action theme from The Grandmaster Williams.
Isn’t it possible that the fifth cellist had a small mp3 recorder in his bag ?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not encouraging such behaviour (although I admit I’m overly exited to hear the theme) but just wondering.
